Sustainable Fashion Series No.One

Series no.one
In todays world it can be very hard to find sustainable fashion without being green washed by companies. Since the industrial revolution began, we have seen mass production take over every aspect of retail. In the recent years, consumers have become more educated with the effects mass production can cause to the workers and surrounding environment. Today many people look elsewhere to find sustainable fashion. In this short series I will explore some avenues in which you could create conscious decisions to be more environmentally friendly with the clothes we wear or purchase.
The one great and major aspect of creating sustainable clothing is customising it to suit your taste and desired fit. In this series of ‘Sustainable Fashion’ we will cover upcycling!
Upcycling is reusing, repurposing and recycling items, such as clothing, to create something more valuable or useful than its original form.
Going to your local op shops such as Salvos, Savers or Vinnies is a great place to start. Here you can find second hand clothing to give new life too. By purchasing second hand clothing, you are minimising the 500,000 tonnes of textiles that are ending up in landfill each year (according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics).
Old and vintage gems are now a new and modern trend.
Going to opportunity shops and vintage warehouses allows you to find unique items that aren’t commonly seen in mainstream retail stores. You are allowing an item to carry more history than before by continuing its product life cycle.
Here is what I have found at my local op shop!!
Fire red hot pants in great condition too! Often op shops give a 10% discount to students or even have a loyalty program if you wanted to save some extra coin.
Unfortunately the pants were two sizes too big. But don’t let an ill fitted garment stop you from buying it if you love the way it looks on the hanger!
I had altered the pants at the side seams and shorted the waistband to create a perfect fit for me, even making them high waisted. Now they’re my go to item in my wardrobe!
With some adjustments and customisations you can really make an item unique to you. Don’t be afraid to get creative! There is an abundance of resources online to help you create your vision into reality.
